Le Boeuf sur le toit

Renaud Capuçon, Daniel Harding, Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen - 2001

For his first disc as an exclusive Virgin Classics artist the young French violinist Renaud Capuçon joins Daniel Harding and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in a dazzling programme of French virtuoso showpieces for violin and orchestra. Works by Saint-Saëns include the brilliant and mischievous Introduction and Rondo capriccioso and the highly virtuosic Havanaise, while Ravel also piles up the technical difficulties in his Hungarian fantasy Tzigane. The disc takes its title from Milhaud’s effervescent cinéma-fantaisie “Le Bœuf sur le toit” – a boisterous suite of Brazilian folkdances heard here in its version for violin and orchestra and originally written to accompany movie footage of Charlie Chaplin.
